ঝিরিঝিরি বৃষ্টি হবে
বসবার ঘরের কণ্ঠঘড়ি গান গেয়ে চলেছে। টিক টক, সেভেন ও’ক্লক। টিং টিং, ঢংঢং। ভোর হল। দোর খোলো। খুকুমণি জাগো রে। এমন ভাব করছে, যেন কেউ এমনিতে উঠবে না।
সকালের বাড়ি ফাঁকা পড়ে রয়েছে। ঘড়ি টিকটিকিয়ে চলেছে। শূন্যতার ভেতরে নিজের শব্দের প্রতিধ্বনি নিজেই করছে। সাতটা নয়—প্রাতরাশ হয়। সাতটা দশ—পড়তে বোস।

রে ব্র্যাডবেরি বেড়ালদের ভালোবাসতেন। সে ভালোবাসার টান এতটাই যে কোনো এক সময়ে তাঁর ঘরে ঘরকন্না পাতিয়ে বসেছিল বাইশখানি মার্জার। যে দিন মারা গেলেন, সেদিনও তাঁর বেসমেন্টে দুটি বেড়ালের [আরো পড়ুন]

ন’টা নাগাদ হালকা খানিক খাবার নিয়ে খেতে বসেছিল মন্টাগ। তখন হঠাৎ সদর দরজাটা মিলড্রেডের নাম ধরে চিৎকার করে উঠল। মিলড্রেড পার্লার ছেড়ে এমন জোরে সদরের দিকে ছুট দিল যেন কোনো জেগে ওঠা আগ্নেয়গিরির মুখ থেকে পালাচ্ছে। খানিক বাদে দরজা দিয়ে ঢুকে এসে মিসেস ফেল্প্স্, আর মিসেস বাওয়েল্স্ও হাতে একটা করে মার্টিনির গ্লাস ধরে তেড়েফুঁড়ে [আরো পড়ুন]
“জীবন মানে কী?”
রঞ্জনের দাদু’র এই প্রশ্নটা শুনে আমাদের তর্ক থেমে গেল।
ভ্যাপসা গরম, হঠাৎ বৃষ্টি, আর মাঝেমধ্যেই ‘টু..কি’ করা নীল আকাশ। ঠিক কোথায় বেড়াতে যাওয়া যায়— সেই নিয়ে কোনো সর্বসম্মত সিদ্ধান্ত হয়নি। অতঃপর রঞ্জনদের বাড়িতে জমায়েত হয়েছিলাম আমরা সবাই। উপলক্ষ্য ছিল তালের বড়া আর তালক্ষীর খাওয়া।
“হাপুশ হুপুশ শব্দ, চারিদিক [আরো পড়ুন]
“জর্জ, বাচ্চাদের খেলাঘরটা একবার দেখবে?”
“কেন? কী হয়েছে?”
“তা ঠিক জানি না।”
“তাহলে?”
“একবার দ্যাখোই না। না পারলে সাইকোলজিস্ট ডাকো।”
“বাচ্চাদের ঘর দেখে সাইকোলজিস্ট কী করবে?”
“কী করবে সে তুমি খুব ভালোই জানো।” রান্নাঘরের স্টোভটা আপন মনে গুঞ্জন তুলে চারজনের রাতের খাবার রাঁধে। সেদিকে তাকিয়ে কিছুক্ষণ চুপ করে থাকে জর্জের স্ত্রী।
“খেলাঘরটা আগের চাইতে কেমন যেন আলাদা হয়ে গেছে।”
৪৫১ ডিগ্রি ফারেনহাইট। যে তাপে কাগজ পোড়ে। পুড়ে যায় বই… কাগজে ছেপে বাঁধিয়ে নেয়া অক্ষরমালা, যা কিনা জ্ঞানের সঞ্চয়মাধ্যমের প্রতীক।
আকৈশোর গ্রন্থাগার থেকে আরেক গ্রন্থাগারে তাঁর পদচারণা। কলেজি শিক্ষা পাননি। খবর কাগজ বেচতেন তরুণ বয়সে। আর তারই পাশাপাশি যতটা, সময় পেতেন, কাটাতেন লাইব্রেরির শব্দহীন রিডিংরুমে, তার বইদের সঙ্গে। এই হলেন ব্র্যাডবেরি, রে ব্র্যাডবেরি।
গতবছর কল্পবিশ্বের জন্য একখানা গল্প অনুবাদ করেছিলাম। আশার টু। রে ব্র্যাডবেরি। বুঝিনি সেই সূঁচ পরে লাঙল হয়ে দেখা দেবে। গল্পটা খুশিখুশি মুখে নিজের মৌলিক ও অনূদিত কল্পগল্প সংকলন ‘অঙ্কিটের বুদবুদে’ ঢোকাতে গেছি, সে বইয়েরও প্রকাশক কল্পবিশ্ব— হঠাৎ একদিন দীপ ঘোষের ফোন। দিদি এখন এ গল্পটা এই বইতে রাখবেন না। আমাদের বড়ো পরিকল্পনা আসছে রে ব্র্যাডবেরি নিয়ে।
সায়েন্স ফিকশনের জগতে রে ব্র্যাডবেরির নাম একেবারে প্রথম সারিতে থাকে, যেমন চমৎকার কল্পনাশক্তি, তেমনি বলিষ্ঠ সাহিত্য তাঁর। অথচ শোনা যায় তিনি নিজে ‘সায়েন্স ফিকশন লেখক’ বলে পরিচিত হতে চাইতেন না। তাঁর লেখার মূল উপজীব্য হল একটা চমৎকার কল্পনা, যাকে কেন্দ্র করে একটা উপভোগ্য গল্প তৈরি হবে৷ সেটা সায়েন্স ফিকশন হতে পারে, সায়েন্স ফ্যান্টাসি [আরো পড়ুন]
ABSTRACT
The paper is a study of Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles as a modern mythology that negates the old myth of the Phoenix as a figure of survival. It is argued that such a model that assures of continuity even after self-destruction is re-imagined. Bradbury turns the myth around, as a new myth that highlights the death wish of humanity is reversed in creating a human friendly Mars that keeps the fire of the Phoenix burning but with no scope for it jump in and come back. The new Mythology / New Mars imagined by Bradbury is a literary world and the technology that enables is also a literary machine. These ‘Machineries of Joy’ are the agents of survival by dispensing ‘Medicine for Melancholy’.
